OWN COMPOSITIONS, IMPROVISATION AND JAZZ

Particularly Keith Jarrett's style in its clarity and his ability to create a universe out of a little motif – such as a chord or a melody – has a very inspiring effect on Andreas Woyke. Bands like the Pat Metheny Group (with pianist Lyle Mays) or the Al Di Meola Project gave Woyke many impulses – especially concerning the almost classical complexity of their compositions.
Woykes works can only partially be considered as compositions because he is not writing them down note by note. The notation is more similar to that of a jazz-standard that usually shows a melody and chords and leaves space for improvising. They have a basic harmonic structure but apart from that they stay flexible and can – similar as in jazz – change by time. A good example for this is „Acconci Island“ - composed 2003 for Graz Cultural Capital Of Europe and showing the process of building the island in the Mur river by Vito Acconci.
2003 until 2004 Woyke performed also with his Fusion-Band „D'Yamba“ - founded together with guitarist Manfred Temmel – and brought in a number of compositions for this band.
