TEACHING
Andreas Woyke teaches piano and chamber music at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst (university for music and the performing arts) in Graz. He is a regular guest teacher at
Musik Zentral Austria music festival in the styrian region of Austria, where, as well as giving conventional master classes, he manages an improvisation course specialising in jazz improvisation. Sharing his knowledge about his own continuous work with music and his stage experience has a particular meaning for his teaching.
„Classical musicians and jazz musicians work in general with exactly the same material – the components of music and their unwritten rules are valid for both of them. However, learning about those different styles and working with them showed me how different it can be considering them. For example – a certain sequence of chords can be interpreted completely different by musicians with classical education from those grown up with jazz theory, even if both hear the same harmonies. Among classical education it is my concern to show classical students a way to jazz by talking about these similarities and differences.“
