| When
I saw a photograph of the mur-island model by
Vito Acconci for the first time I was immediately
impressed by this wonderful artwork with its clear
structure on one hand and its playful shape on the other.
One day I sat down at the piano and started to improvise. I had the idea to translate my feelings watching the mur-island into music. Thus, a large piano piece in one movement of approximately 40 to 50 minutes was created. Inside the one-movement-shape there are six parts - each flowing into the next without interruption. The piece does have a concept and the main form as well as some harmonic and rhythmical patterns are fixed. Nevertheless, it is improvised music, so each performance will be unique.

The titles of the different parts show the process of bringing the island to Graz - starting with the flowing of the mur river, constructing the island, embedding it to it's final location, being empty, breathing slowly life into it and finally being a lively and communicative part of Graz. For some people explanations like that might be helpful, others prefer to listen to the music without any particular visual theme or imaginative connection - so do I. This concept was not made with a particular purpose - it just came into my mind while listening to my own music. Someone else might hear complete different things and connect other images out of it. Here are six mp3-soundclips
- one of each part. Each of them is about three minutes
of time (1 mb). I hope you will enjoy the music as well
as I do enjoy watching the island. |
